Where the drink goes in a van build (and why you probably shouldn't cut a hole for it)

Somewhere after the wire run and around the third revision of the galley, a build stops being a drawing and turns into a place you live in. That's usually the evening you notice it: you designed this thing down to the drawer slides, you gave the bikes a garage and the greywater a tank, and you are sitting here holding a mug with nowhere to set it down.
So the question comes up late, in the worst possible way — as a retrofit. It's a better question asked early, and it's a stranger question than it looks, because a cup holder is one of the few things in a van conversion where the correct build decision is usually don't build it.
Here is the argument, and then the cases where the opposite is true.
Three different problems get called "a cup holder," and they have three different answers.
Moving. A drink that has to stay put at 60 mph, or through a washboard forest road, is a restraint problem. It needs mechanical capture — something that grips, bolts, or straps. Nothing that merely sits on a surface solves this. Not a mat, not a weighted holder, not a wide base, not anything sold as a coaster. This one lives up front, and it's the only case where a bolted-in part is clearly the right answer.
Parked, at one station, for years. The galley counter you stand at every morning. Here a built-in can earn its keep — but as a lip, not a hole. Build the geometry that catches everything, not the geometry that fits one thing.
Parked, following your body. The bench, the bed, the swivel seat, the camp chair outside the sliding door. This is most of your day, and it is the case that defeats built-ins entirely, because the drink goes where you go and a hole doesn't.
Most builders get this backwards. They solve the third problem with hardware designed for the second.
A van build is designed almost entirely around volume. Every decision in the plan — the garage height, the depth of the upper cabinets, whether the fridge is a slide or a drop-in — is a fight over cubic inches, and a good build wins that fight decisively. You end up with more storage than the square footage has any right to hold.
Flat, level, reachable, at-elbow-height surface is the opposite. You cannot cabinet your way to more of it. Every square inch of it is already the prep station, the desk, the sink surround, and the place the headlamp and the keys land. When people say the van has no room for a drink, that's not quite it. The van has plenty of room. It has almost no surface, and the surface it has is triple-booked.
Which is why a recessed cup holder is such an expensive-looking cheap part. It costs maybe twelve dollars and a hole saw, and it permanently spends the scarcest resource in the vehicle.

It commits to a diameter forever, and your drinkware turns over faster than your cabinetry. This is the failure everyone underestimates. A galley lasts the life of the van. Your containers last about two years. In the span of one build's life, the average person's daily driver has gone from a Nalgene to a 30 oz tumbler to a 40 oz one with a handle, and drinkware geometry over that same decade has diverged wildly — tapered, straight-walled, wide-base, handled. A hole is a bet that the thing in your hand in five years has the same diameter as the thing in your hand today. It doesn't.
It needs depth you already sold to something else. A recessed holder isn't a hole; it's a cylinder hanging below the counter, three or four inches of it, in the exact zone where the drawer box, the sink basin, the fridge slide or the fresh tank already lives. In a house you'd never notice. In a van it means you have to fix the drink location before you build the cabinet carcass — that is, before you have spent a single night finding out where you actually set a cup down.
It's a deliberate breach in your water management. Counters in a van get wet, and a cut edge in plywood or butcher block is end grain looking for moisture. Marine recessed holders ship with drain tubes for a reason, and in a van a drain has to go somewhere: either you plumb it into grey, or it drips into the cabinet you just built.
It's a hole, and holes are the one thing a build can't take back. Almost everyone rebuilds part of the galley. Storage gets reconfigured, the fridge moves, the counter gets a new top. Screw holes and adhesive ghosts survive all of it. If you already have a small archive of regret hardware in this van, you know the tax.
And it only works while you're standing at it. Which, in a rig this size, is a smaller share of the day than the plan assumes.
This comes up in every build group, and it deserves a straight answer, because the Lagun is genuinely the best table in vans and it is also the wrong place for a hole.
Look at what the system is actually rated for. Lagun's standard configuration supports a tabletop up to 30″ × 40″ and 50 lb total, including the weight of the tabletop itself — the folding mount drops that to 40 lb and 24″ × 36″. The bracket has to land on a solid vertical surface — Lagun recommends a minimum 5/8″ wall thickness — with real framing behind it, shimmed out at least an inch so the arm can swing. And the manual's own caution is the giveaway: leaning or excessive pushing on the tabletop can damage parts.
That's a cantilever with a published budget, and a full 40 oz tumbler parked at the outboard corner is exactly the load case it likes least — weight at the end of the lever, plus a hole cut through the panel that's carrying it. The other half of the problem is scheduling: the Lagun's whole virtue is that it stows. A drink spot that folds against the wall every evening is a drink spot that isn't there for the part of the day you most need it.
If you want a hard surface at the table, the answer is a lip around the top, not a bore through it.
Three places. Be honest about all three.
The cab, for driving. The factory recesses in a Sprinter, Transit or ProMaster were molded for a fast-food cup and are an ongoing joke to anyone carrying a real tumbler. This is the one spot where a bolted-in aftermarket part — a seat-bolt mount, a floor console, a proper cab organizer — is the right call, because you are solving restraint at speed, and restraint at speed needs a mechanical grip. Anything that only sits on a surface is a parked-van answer, full stop.
A ledge at bed height. If I could make every builder add one thing, it's this: a small lipped shelf or a wall cubby beside the head of the bed. Not a cup holder — a shelf with a raised edge, or a canvas pocket between the ribs. This is the nightstand nobody builds, and it fixes the 2 a.m. problem, which is not really a tipping problem. It's a retention and findability problem: a bottle on a wall-to-wall mattress on a slight grade rolls to the low corner in the dark, and you go after it with a headlamp, over a sleeping dog. A two-inch lip ends that permanently. Blocking behind that wall costs nothing at framing time and is miserable to add later.
A fiddle rail on the galley. Boats worked this out a long time ago and vans have mostly not borrowed it. Sea galleys don't try to hold every object individually; they raise the edges so nothing leaves the surface, and where the stakes are highest — the stove — they gimbal it so pans don't spill. A ¾-inch hardwood fiddle along the aisle edge of your counter costs no surface, needs no hole in the field of the top, and catches the mug, the knife, the phone, the lid, and the ramekin. Leave a gap at one corner so you can still sweep crumbs off. That single detail outperforms any cup-shaped recess, because a van's problem is never one object.
The pattern across all three: build lips, blocking and mounts. Don't build sockets.
Where the drink habitually lives should be chosen by what is underneath it, not by what's convenient at elbow height.
Do not put the everyday drink station above the battery bank, the inverter, the busbar or the fuse block, and don't put it where a full tumbler's worth of liquid runs toward the laptop. This is a decision that can only be made at build time, because after the build it's decided for you by where the counter happens to be.
The other thing underneath matters just as much: foam and textile. A spill on a hard counter is a paper-towel event. A spill into a mattress or a bench cushion is a moisture event in a vehicle that already has a moisture problem. EPA's guidance for buildings is that if wet materials are dried within 24–48 hours, in most cases mold won't grow — and that absorbent, porous materials like carpet may simply have to be thrown out once they're moldy, because mold grows into the empty spaces inside them. Twenty-four hours is easy in a house with a furnace. It is not easy in a foam mattress in a van you are sleeping in tonight, in weather you don't control.
Which is a design argument, not a housekeeping one: put the intended drink spot on something hard and near something absorbent as rarely as possible.
The only part of the drink question that genuinely belongs in the build phase is the blocking — solid backing behind the walls at bed height, behind the Lagun bracket, and along the counter edge. Backing is free while the ribs are open and effectively impossible once the paneling, the insulation and the wire runs are in. Put it in for shelves you're only 40 percent sure you want.
Everything else should wait until you've slept in the van for a month, in the season you'll actually use it. Track where the cup genuinely lands. It won't be where the drawing says. People build furniture for behavior they haven't observed yet, and that's most of the hardware that ends up in the drawer with the rest of the must-haves.
And run that trial period with loose objects, not stuck ones. Every adhesive has a service temperature, and a sealed van in the sun is a harsher thermal environment than anything the packaging on a suction cup or a strip of mounting tape was written for. The mounts that survive a summer in a van are the ones with nothing to release.
The honest options for the loose case, roughly in ascending order of how well they work:
Steadi is one molded piece of Shore 85A TPU — not silicone — 2.8 inches tall, with a base 5.2 inches across that is fixed: it doesn't expand, contract or deform. The fins flex to grip the bottom inch of the container. The mechanism is simple and worth stating precisely, because it's the part that gets sold badly everywhere else: the fixed 5.2-inch base widens the base of support, so the container's center of mass has to travel further horizontally before it passes outside that base. Tipping therefore takes a much larger tilt. The tack of the TPU is what resists sliding, which is the honest answer to a van that the parking job left a couple of degrees off level. It doesn't right a drink, level anything, or do anything clever. It just resists tipping, and settles in wherever you put it down.
Where it belongs, honestly: the hard surfaces. The galley counter, the Lagun top, a plywood bed platform, a bench lid, the fold-down shelf, the tailgate, the camp table outside. That's the case it's built for and the case where it clearly works.
Where I'd be straight with you: deep foam. A wide base puts the container's weight down across a five-inch footprint instead of the container's own base, so it sinks in less — but that's an argument about pressure, not a promise about tipping. On a mattress or a soft cushion, treat any loose holder as a convenience rather than a guarantee. If the bed is where you actually drink tea for two hours a night, build the ledge.
The rest of the limits, so nothing is a surprise: it is not a mount, clamp, strap or restraint, so it is not a driving solution — that's the cab's job and it needs hardware. Handled mugs are an honest no; the handle blocks a fin. It doesn't float, it sinks, which matters if you're set up by water. It doesn't insulate or seal. And a direct hard knock — the dog, an elbow, the sliding door — still wins.
Practically, it's small enough to live in a door pocket or a galley cubby and join the pre-drive sweep rather than disappear into the junk drawer, and there's nothing to install, so it costs the build no holes and leaves no adhesive ghost. It's dishwasher safe. Fit is the one thing to settle first, and not from an article: the fit check and the container list live on steadilabs.com, measured against the current page, and it's worth running before you buy rather than after. The drink spot is the last thing that gets designed in a van and the first thing that annoys you. It's also, unusually for this hobby, a case where the disciplined move is to leave a gap in the plan on purpose — put the backing in, leave the hole out, and let the way you actually live in the thing decide the rest.
